I don’t really have to start by arguing that when it comes to footwear, Doc Martens are (and will always be) the ultimate style choice, right? They can do any style, any age, and any situation. The span generations like few other styles; for an example of how the youngsters do them these days, just check out X Factor’s darling Janet Devlin and her vintage shorts and white 8-eyes combos.
Glad we all agree.
So, seeing as Docs are a must, but don’t necessarily come cheap, what’s the basic range a girl needs to get by? All depends on your preference, naturally, but here’s a (very expandable) list of the basic Dr Martens styles every girl should have in her wardrobe.
Or, in other words, a totally random reason to look at pretty shoes:
1. The everyday classic

It’s the basic of basics. The shoe that’s comfy enough to carry you through the longest and busiest of days and looks fantastic with any outfit you can possibly choose. The smooth leather colour range is bold enough to add a spark to your everyday style, but also lets you get away with wearing your beloved boots in the average casual-smart work setting.
2. The eye catcher

The bright one that sets the scene. It doesn’t matter which colour you go for with these patent leather shinies, they’ll take care of the turning of heads for you, so you can just relax and enjoy the attention (and the shoe envy). Especially great for the duller autumn and winter months, when we have to hide behind layers of practical, warm clothes, these guys will make sure your feet feel the sunshine all year round.
3. The floral fantastic

The girly one for the romantic times. With florals available in a range from granny curtain to summer meadows, I particularly heart this beautiful black-and-white design. It only goes to show that Docs can be dreamy, feminine, and in this case probably even classy enough to wear with your wedding dress.
4. The funky pattern

The bold one for your loud days. The choice of patterns is endless these days, there’s the grunge, the skulls, the polka dots, the special editions… To conjure up a bit of the old-days punk flavour, how about some tartan? In screaming hot pink, because anyone can do red tartan and we’re not just anyone!
5. The special one

The one that makes your heart go pop. Not really a particular style category, this one’s all about your personal favourite. It could be the one you’ve been saving up for for ages, the one that helps you pull every single time you flaunt it, or your very first pair that’s so worn down by now that it’s practically vintage. Here’s the one that’s been keeping me in a constant dilemma of rent vs. eating vs. shoes for the last year or so.
Well, that’s it for the minimal list of essential basics. But that’s just me. What are your essentials?
